What is Birkman method?
I get often asked to explain what is the Birkman Method and how it can be best applied. Here’s are brief answer:
The Birkman Method really is a personality assessment tool that is used in personal and professional development. It was created by Dr. Roger Birkman in the 1950s and has since been used by individuals, teams, and organizations to improve communication, increase self-awareness, and optimize performance.
The Birkman Method measures personality along five key areas:
Usual Behavior: This measures the way an individual typically behaves in different situations.
Underlying Needs: This measures the needs that an individual has in order to feel comfortable and motivated in different situations.
Stress Behaviors: This measures the way an individual may behave under stress or when their needs are not being met.
Interests: This measures the activities and tasks that an individual is most interested in and likely to enjoy.
Organizational Focus: This measures the way an individual prefers to work within an organization, including their level of autonomy and preference for structure.
The Birkman Method also provides insights into an individual's communication style, decision-making approach, and leadership style.
The results of the Birkman Method assessment can be used to improve self-awareness, enhance communication and collaboration within teams, and identify areas for personal and professional growth. The assessment is often used in leadership development, team building, career counseling, and personal coaching.
